Job Summary:
The Mammalogist is responsible for conducting scientific research and investigations related to mammalian biology, behavior, ecology, and conservation. This role primarily involves studying mammals in their natural habitats, collecting and analyzing data, and providing expert knowledge and advice on mammalian species.
Responsibilities:
1. Conduct fieldwork and surveys to observe, identify, and document various mammalian species.
2. Employ various scientific techniques and equipment to study mammalian behavior, population dynamics, habitat preferences, and ecological interactions.
3. Capture, handle, and safely release mammals for research purposes following ethical guidelines and relevant regulations.
4. Collect and analyze data on mammalian abundance, distribution, reproduction, diet, and other relevant ecological parameters.
5. Apply statistical methods and modeling techniques to interpret data and draw conclusions.
6. Prepare comprehensive reports and scientific publications, including research findings, methodologies, and recommendations.
7. Collaborate with other researchers, scientists, and organizations to share knowledge, exchange information, and contribute to broader scientific efforts.
8. Stay up-to-date with latest research and advancements in mammalian biology, conservation, and related fields.
9. Participate in scientific conferences, seminars, and workshops to present research findings and network with fellow professionals.
10. Assist in securing funding for research projects through grant writing and proposal development.
11. Develop and maintain databases, research records, and other relevant documentation.
12. Maintain and calibrate scientific equipment, ensuring its proper functioning and accuracy.
13. Comply with all safety protocols and ethical standards during research activities.
14. Provide expert advice and guidance to stakeholders, including government agencies, conservation organizations, and academic institutions, regarding mammalian biology, population management, and conservation strategies.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. A minimum of a Master's degree in Biology, Zoology, Mammalogy, or a closely related field is required. A Ph.D. is preferred.
2. Proven experience conducting scientific research in the field of mammalogy.
3. In-depth knowledge of mammalian biology, behavior, ecology, and conservation principles.
4. Proficiency in capturing, handling, and safely releasing mammals using appropriate techniques.
5. Strong understanding of statistical analysis and data interpretation methods.
6. Excellent observational and analytical skills with attention to detail.
7. Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare scientific reports and publications.
8. Proficiency in using scientific equipment and software for data collection and analysis.
9. Ability to work independently and within a team, demonstrating strong organizational and time management skills.
10. Familiarity with relevant regulations, ethical guidelines, and permits related to mammalian research.
11. Flexibility to work irregular hours, including weekends and holidays, and to travel to remote field locations as required.
12. Proven ability to adapt to changing research priorities and work effectively in challenging environments.
13. Strong commitment to animal welfare and ethical treatment of research subjects.
14. Valid driver's license and ability to operate off-road vehicles in rugged terrains.
