Job Description: Wildlife Rehabilitation Manager
Position Summary:
The Wildlife Rehabilitation Manager is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of wildlife rehabilitation programs within the organization. This role requires a deep understanding of agriculture, environmental science, and wildlife conservation practices to ensure the effective care and rehabilitation of injured or orphaned wildlife. The Wildlife Rehabilitation Manager will be responsible for supervising a team of rehabilitation staff, coordinating with external agencies, and ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and ethical standards.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Develop and implement wildlife rehabilitation programs, policies, and procedures.
2. Supervise a team of wildlife rehabilitation staff, including recruitment, training, and performance management.
3. Oversee the daily operations of the wildlife rehabilitation facility, ensuring proper care, feeding, and medical treatment of wildlife.
4. Collaborate with environmental agencies, animal control, and other stakeholders to coordinate the transfer, rescue, and release of wildlife.
5. Maintain accurate records of wildlife admissions, treatments, and releases in compliance with regulatory requirements.
6. Conduct regular assessments of wildlife patients to monitor progress, ensure appropriate care, and make decisions regarding release or alternative options.
7. Develop and maintain relationships with local veterinarians and specialists for consultation and assistance when needed.
8. Manage the facility's budget, including procurement of supplies, equipment, and medications necessary for wildlife rehabilitation.
9. Stay up-to-date with current research, best practices, and advancements in wildlife rehabilitation techniques.
10. Promote public awareness and education about wildlife conservation and rehabilitation through outreach programs, events, and educational materials.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Environmental Science, Biology, or a related field.
2. Proven experience in wildlife rehabilitation, including a minimum of 3 years in a management or supervisory role.
3. In-depth knowledge of native wildlife species, their behavior, and habitat requirements.
4. Familiarity with wildlife rehabilitation techniques, such as wound management, nutrition, and wildlife release protocols.
5. Understanding of relevant federal, state, and local regulations governing wildlife rehabilitation and captive wildlife care.
6. Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills to effectively manage a team and collaborate with external agencies and stakeholders.
7. Strong organizational abilities, with attention to detail and the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
8. Good problem-solving skills, with the ability to make sound decisions for the welfare of wildlife patients.
9. Proficient computer skills, including experience with databases and record-keeping software.
10. Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with team members, external partners, and the public.
