Job Description: Wildlife Rehabilitator (Agriculture and Environmental Science - Wildlife Conservation)
Position Summary:
The Wildlife Rehabilitator will be responsible for providing care, treatment, and rehabilitation to injured, orphaned, or sick wildlife species. This role requires a deep understanding of wildlife biology, conservation principles, and environmental science, as well as strong practical skills in animal handling, medical treatment, and rehabilitation techniques. The Wildlife Rehabilitator will work closely with a team of professionals to ensure the welfare and successful release of wildlife back into their natural habitats.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assess, diagnose, and provide appropriate medical care and treatment to injured or sick wildlife species.
- Develop and implement species-specific rehabilitation programs, following established protocols and guidelines.
- Ensure the physical and mental well-being of wildlife in rehabilitation, including proper nutrition, hydration, and environmental enrichment.
- Administer medications and perform medical procedures as required, in accordance with veterinary instructions and applicable laws and regulations.
- Monitor and document the progress of wildlife patients, maintaining accurate records of behavior, health, and treatment plans.
- Coordinate and collaborate with other wildlife rehabilitators, veterinarians, and experts in the field to seek advice, guidance, and support as needed.
- Prepare wildlife for release, including conditioning exercises, testing for flight or hunting abilities, and facilitating their adaptation to natural environments.
- Conduct educational programs, workshops, and presentations to raise awareness about wildlife conservation, rehabilitation, and human-wildlife interactions.
- Adhere to all relevant wildlife protection laws, regulations, and ethical guidelines, ensuring compliance at all times.
- Maintain cleanliness and hygiene of animal enclosures, facilities, and equipment, following biosecurity protocols.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Environmental Science, Wildlife Biology, or a related field.
- Proven experience in wildlife rehabilitation or a similar field, with a comprehensive understanding of wildlife conservation principles and practices.
- Strong knowledge of wildlife biology, behavior, and natural habitats, with the ability to identify various wildlife species.
- Proficient in animal handling techniques, including capturing, restraining, and transporting wildlife safely and humanely.
- Excellent medical knowledge and skills in administering treatments, medications, and medical procedures to wildlife.
- Ability to assess and diagnose wildlife injuries or illnesses accurately, and develop appropriate treatment plans.
- Solid understanding of environmental enrichment techniques and practices to ensure the well-being of wildlife in captivity.
- Excellent record-keeping and documentation skills, with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate and work effectively within a team.
- Strong dedication to wildlife conservation and ethical care, with a genuine passion for rehabilitating and releasing wildlife.
- Physical fitness and stamina to handle and transport wildlife, often in challenging outdoor environments.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, as wildlife rehabilitation may require round-the-clock attention.
