Job Description: Fire Chief
Position Overview:
The Fire Chief is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of fire prevention, emergency response, and fire suppression activities within the jurisdiction. This position plays a critical role in ensuring public safety, protecting property, and minimizing loss of life due to fire-related incidents. The Fire Chief is the highest-ranking officer within the fire department and serves as a key liaison with other emergency response agencies and community stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Provide strategic leadership and direction to the fire department, ensuring effective and efficient operations.
2. Develop and implement policies, procedures, and standards to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations related to fire safety and emergency response.
3. Direct and coordinate fire prevention efforts, including inspections, code enforcement, public education programs, and community outreach initiatives.
4. Plan, organize, and supervise fire suppression activities, including fire investigations, hazardous materials response, search and rescue operations, and disaster response.
5. Collaborate with other emergency response agencies, such as police, EMS, and public health departments, to develop and maintain effective emergency response plans and procedures.
6. Manage the fire department budget, including resource allocation, procurement, and fiscal accountability.
7. Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate firefighting personnel, ensuring the department is adequately staffed with qualified and competent individuals.
8. Foster a positive and inclusive work environment, promoting teamwork, professional development, and employee morale.
9. Maintain accurate records and reports related to fire incidents, personnel activities, training, and equipment maintenance.
10. Stay updated on industry best practices, emerging technologies, and legislative changes affecting fire safety and emergency response.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Emergency Management, or a related field.
2. Extensive experience in fire services, including progressively responsible leadership roles.
3. In-depth knowledge of fire prevention, fire suppression techniques, incident command systems, and emergency response protocols.
4. Strong understanding of local, state, and federal fire safety regulations, codes, and standards.
5. Proven ability to develop and implement effective fire prevention programs and policies.
6. Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate and build relationships with diverse stakeholders.
7. Demonstrated experience in budget management, resource allocation, and fiscal responsibility.
8. Exceptional problem-solving and decision-making abilities, with a strong focus on critical thinking and sound judgment.
9. Ability to handle high-pressure situations, make prompt and effective decisions, and lead teams during emergencies.
10. Proficiency in computer applications and firefighting software systems.
11. Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
