Job Description: Laboratory Animal Technician - Veterinary Medicine
Position Summary:
The Laboratory Animal Technician plays a crucial role in supporting veterinary research activities within the field of Veterinary Medicine. Working under the supervision of the Principal Investigator or laboratory manager, the technician is responsible for ensuring the proper care, handling, and welfare of laboratory animals. This role requires exceptional skills and knowledge in the field of veterinary science, as well as a strong commitment to animal welfare.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Provide routine care and husbandry to laboratory animals, including feeding, watering, and maintaining clean and safe housing conditions.
2. Monitor animal health and behavior, promptly reporting any abnormalities or concerns to the appropriate personnel.
3. Administer medications, treatments, and vaccinations as directed by the veterinary staff.
4. Perform technical procedures such as blood collection, sample preparation, and basic laboratory tests.
5. Assist in surgical procedures, including animal preparation, anesthesia monitoring, and post-operative care.
6. Maintain accurate and detailed records of animal care, health, and experimental procedures.
7. Ensure compliance with applicable regulations, protocols, and ethical guidelines related to animal welfare and research.
8. Clean and sanitize animal holding areas, equipment, and laboratory spaces according to established protocols.
9. Assist in the development and implementation of research protocols and procedures.
10. Collaborate with veterinary staff, research scientists, and other team members to achieve project goals.
Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Veterinary Technology, Animal Science, or a related field.
2. Certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) or an equivalent certification is highly desirable.
3. Proven experience working with laboratory animals, preferably in a research or veterinary setting.
4. Strong knowledge of animal anatomy, physiology, and behavior.
5. Proficient in animal handling, restraint, and basic veterinary care techniques.
6. Familiarity with common laboratory equipment and techniques for sample collection and analysis.
7. Understanding of research protocols, including experimental design, data collection, and analysis.
8. Excellent attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records.
9. Ability to work independently or as part of a team, demonstrating strong interpersonal and communication skills.
10. Knowledge of relevant regulations and guidelines, such as the Animal Welfare Act and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) requirements.
