Position Overview:
The Animal Welfare Auditor plays a crucial role in ensuring the welfare of animals involved in veterinary research. They are responsible for conducting comprehensive audits and assessments of animal facilities, research projects, and related processes to ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines and ethical standards. The Animal Welfare Auditor will collaborate with various stakeholders to identify areas for improvement and implement effective measures to enhance animal welfare practices.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Conduct thorough audits of animal facilities and research projects to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, industry standards, and ethical guidelines.
2. Assess animal welfare practices, including housing conditions, environmental enrichment, healthcare, and handling protocols, to identify areas for improvement.
3. Review research protocols, experimental procedures, and animal handling techniques to ensure adherence to humane practices and minimize animal distress.
4. Develop comprehensive audit reports, highlighting observations, recommendations, and compliance status, and communicate findings to relevant stakeholders.
5. Collaborate with researchers, veterinarians, and facility staff to provide guidance and support in implementing improved animal welfare practices.
6. Stay updated with new regulations, guidelines, and industry best practices related to animal welfare in veterinary research, and ensure compliance within the organization.
7. Conduct training sessions and workshops to educate research personnel on the importance of animal welfare and provide guidance on best practices.
8. Participate in the development and enhancement of animal welfare policies and procedures to align with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
9. Work closely with regulatory bodies, ethics committees, and other relevant external agencies to ensure compliance with animal welfare regulations and maintain necessary certifications.
10. Foster a culture of continuous improvement by promoting awareness, understanding, and commitment to animal welfare throughout the organization.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree or equivalent veterinary qualification.
2. Strong knowledge of animal welfare regulations, guidelines, and ethical considerations in veterinary research.
3. Solid understanding of laboratory animal science, including animal behavior, physiology, and handling techniques.
4. Excellent auditing skills, with the ability to effectively assess and evaluate animal welfare practices and identify areas for improvement.
5. Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy in documenting audit findings and preparing comprehensive reports.
6. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with diverse stakeholders and convey complex information clearly.
7. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to identify potential risks, propose solutions, and drive improvements in animal welfare practices.
8. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple projects simultaneously and meeting deadlines.
