Job Description: Veterinary Comparative Medicine Specialist
Position Overview:
The Veterinary Comparative Medicine Specialist is responsible for conducting research and providing specialized veterinary medical care within the field of comparative medicine. The role involves implementing and overseeing research projects, ensuring animal welfare, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to advance veterinary medicine knowledge. The Veterinary Comparative Medicine Specialist must possess expert knowledge in veterinary medicine, strong research skills, and the ability to provide comprehensive animal care.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Conduct and oversee research projects within the field of comparative medicine, focusing on the study and analysis of animal diseases, treatments, and prevention methods.
2. Develop and implement research protocols, ensuring adherence to ethical guidelines and relevant regulations.
3. Perform comprehensive medical examinations, diagnose illnesses, and administer treatment to animals participating in research studies.
4. Monitor and document animal health and behavior, collecting and analyzing data to evaluate the progress and outcomes of research projects.
5. Collaborate with internal and external research teams to design and execute experiments, sharing knowledge and expertise to achieve research objectives.
6. Maintain accurate records of research findings, including laboratory results, observations, and experimental procedures.
7. Provide guidance and support to veterinary technicians and other research staff, ensuring proper animal care, handling, and welfare.
8. Participate in scientific conferences, seminars, and workshops to stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in veterinary comparative medicine.
9. Contribute to the preparation and submission of research publications, grant proposals, and regulatory documentation.
10. Comply with all safety protocols, including biosecurity measures and the proper use and disposal of hazardous materials.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an accredited veterinary school.
2. Board certification or eligibility in Comparative Medicine specialty.
3. Extensive knowledge and expertise in veterinary medicine, animal physiology, and comparative anatomy.
4. Proven experience in conducting and managing research projects, preferably in a laboratory or academic setting.
5. Strong analytical skills, with the ability to collect, interpret, and present research data effectively.
6. Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects concurrently.
7. Proficient in using laboratory equipment, diagnostic tools, and computer software relevant to veterinary research.
8. Knowledge of animal welfare regulations, research ethics, and compliance with Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) guidelines.
9. Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
