Job Description: IACUC Coordinator (Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee)
Position Overview:
The IACUC Coordinator plays a key role in ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and ethical guidelines related to the use of animals in veterinary research. This position involves coordinating and administering various activities of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) within a veterinary medicine research facility.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Coordinate and facilitate the IACUC protocol review process, ensuring compliance with federal regulations, institution policies, and industry best practices.
2. Collaborate with researchers, principal investigators, and veterinarians to provide guidance on the ethical and regulatory aspects of research involving animals.
3. Review research protocols, amendments, and renewals to assess ethical considerations, scientific merit, and animal welfare concerns.
4. Conduct facility inspections and animal welfare assessments to ensure compliance with regulatory standards, providing recommendations for improvement as necessary.
5. Maintain accurate records of IACUC activities, including protocol review documentation, meeting minutes, and correspondence with researchers.
6. Organize and schedule IACUC meetings, prepare meeting agendas, and provide administrative support to committee members.
7. Assist in the development and implementation of training programs on animal welfare and regulatory compliance for researchers, animal care staff, and IACUC members.
8. Stay updated on changes in regulations, guidelines, and best practices related to animal research and welfare, and ensure their incorporation into IACUC policies and procedures.
9. Collaborate with institutional officials and regulatory agencies during inspections, audits, and investigations related to animal research activities.
10. Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in veterinary medicine, animal science, biology, or a related field. Advanced degrees or certifications in laboratory animal science or veterinary research ethics are desirable.
2. Strong knowledge of federal regulations, guidelines, and standards related to the use of animals in research, including the Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service Policy, and Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.
3. Demonstrated experience working with Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees, preferably in an academic or research institution.
4. Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
5. Attention to detail and strong analytical skills to assess research protocols and identify ethical concerns or potential areas of non-compliance.
6. Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively interact with researchers, veterinarians, committee members, and regulatory authorities.
7. Proficient computer skills, including experience with database management, electronic protocol submission systems, and Microsoft Office Suite.
8. Strong interpersonal skills to foster collaboration, build relationships, and resolve conflicts in a professional manner.
