Job Summary:
The Private Collections Archivist is responsible for managing and preserving private collections within the library's archival department. This role involves organizing, cataloging, and maintaining private collections of documents, photographs, audiovisual materials, and other related items. The Private Collections Archivist ensures the accessibility and long-term preservation of these collections for research and historical purposes.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Assess, acquire, and process private collections in accordance with established archival standards and best practices.
2. Organize, arrange, and describe archival materials in a clear and consistent manner, employing standardized archival principles and practices.
3. Create detailed finding aids, inventories, and catalog records for each private collection to ensure accurate and efficient retrieval of materials.
4. Collaborate with other archivists and librarians to ensure seamless integration of private collections into the larger archival holdings.
5. Conduct preservation assessments and implement appropriate conservation measures to maintain the physical integrity of the private collections.
6. Develop and implement strategies for digitizing select items from the private collections to enhance access and preservation.
7. Provide reference and research assistance to library patrons, scholars, and other stakeholders interested in utilizing the private collections.
8. Promote the private collections through outreach activities, including exhibitions, presentations, and workshops for the wider community.
9. Stay abreast of emerging trends and technologies in archival practices and contribute to the development of departmental policies and procedures.
10. Collaborate with internal and external partners to identify potential donors and secure funding for the acquisition and preservation of private collections.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Master's degree in Library and Information Science with a specialization in Archiving, or a related field.
2. Proven experience in managing and processing archival collections, preferably including private collections.
3. Comprehensive knowledge of archival principles, standards, and best practices, such as DACS, EAD, and MARC.
4. Familiarity with current trends and technologies in digital preservation, including digitization and metadata standards.
5. Proficiency in archival management systems and software for collection management and access, such as Archivists' Toolkit, ArchivesSpace, or similar.
6. Strong analytical and organizational skills, with meticulous attention to detail.
7. Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to create clear and concise finding aids and other descriptive documents.
8. Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team-based environment.
9. Strong commitment to customer service and the ability to interact professionally and effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders.
10. Knowledge of copyright and intellectual property issues related to archival collections.
