Job Summary:
The Library and Archives Curator is responsible for the management, preservation, and organization of library materials and archival collections. This role requires a deep understanding of library and information science principles to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of library services. The Library and Archives Curator oversees the acquisition, cataloging, preservation, and digitization of materials, while also providing research assistance and coordinating outreach activities.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Manage and curate library collections, including books, manuscripts, photographs, audiovisual materials, and digital assets.
2. Develop and implement cataloging standards, metadata schemas, and classification systems to ensure accurate and consistent retrieval of materials.
3. Conduct collection assessments, identify preservation needs, and implement appropriate conservation measures to safeguard materials.
4. Collaborate with library staff to enhance accessibility through digitization projects and the creation of online resources.
5. Provide reference services and research assistance to library users, including faculty, students, and researchers.
6. Develop and deliver library instruction programs, workshops, and presentations to promote information literacy.
7. Collaborate with academic departments and faculty to incorporate library resources into the curriculum.
8. Maintain knowledge of emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in library and archival management.
9. Participate in professional development activities, conferences, and workshops to enhance skills and knowledge.
10. Contribute to the development and implementation of library policies, procedures, and strategic goals.
11. Collaborate with colleagues to plan and execute exhibitions, displays, and special events to showcase library collections.
12. Conduct outreach activities to engage the community and promote the library's resources and services.
13. Assist in the administration of library budgets, including collection development and resource allocation.
14. Supervise and train library staff and volunteers in archival practices, cataloging, and preservation techniques.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Master's degree in Library and Information Science or Archives and Records Management.
2. Extensive knowledge of library and archival principles, standards, and best practices.
3. Strong understanding of cataloging and metadata standards, such as MARC, AACR2, RDA, and Dublin Core.
4. Proficiency in archival management systems, library management systems, and digital asset management platforms.
5. Familiarity with preservation and conservation techniques for various types of library and archival materials.
6. Excellent research skills and ability to provide accurate and timely reference assistance.
7. Experience in developing and delivering library instruction programs and information literacy initiatives.
8. Knowledge of copyright and intellectual property issues related to libraries and archives.
9. Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
10. Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate and build relationships with diverse stakeholders.
11. Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing technologies and evolving library trends.
12. Supervisory experience and ability to train and mentor staff and volunteers.
