Job Summary:
The University Archivist is responsible for overseeing the management, preservation, organization, and accessibility of the university's archival materials. This role involves the acquisition, appraisal, arrangement, description, and preservation of historical records and other materials of enduring value. The University Archivist serves as a vital resource for researchers, faculty, staff, and students seeking information from the university's archives.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Develop and implement policies, procedures, and best practices for the acquisition, arrangement, description, preservation, and access to archival collections.
2. Identify, appraise, and select university records and other materials for permanent preservation, based on their historical, administrative, legal, and research value.
3. Conduct thorough research to enhance the understanding and context of archival materials, ensuring accurate and detailed descriptions.
4. Oversee the arrangement and organization of archival materials using recognized standards, ensuring efficient access and retrieval.
5. Develop and maintain a comprehensive records management program to ensure effective and compliant records retention and disposition.
6. Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including faculty, staff, and administrators, to identify and prioritize archival materials of value and interest to the university community.
7. Provide reference services and support to researchers, faculty, staff, and students accessing archival collections, including assisting with research inquiries and facilitating access to materials.
8. Develop and deliver educational programs, workshops, and presentations to promote the use and understanding of archival materials.
9. Implement and manage digital preservation initiatives, including the digitization of archival materials, to enhance accessibility and long-term preservation.
10. Supervise and train archival staff and student workers, ensuring high-quality work and adherence to archival standards and procedures.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Master's degree in Library and Information Science, Archival Science, or a related field.
2. Demonstrated knowledge of archival principles, practices, and standards, including arrangement, description, preservation, and access.
3. Strong understanding of records management principles and best practices.
4. Proficiency in archival research techniques and resources, including familiarity with online databases and finding aids.
5. Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously.
6. Strong attention to detail, ensuring accuracy and completeness in all aspects of archival work.
7. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, enabling effective interaction with diverse stakeholders.
8. Proficiency in using archival management systems and software for collection management, such as Archivists' Toolkit or ArchivesSpace.
9. Knowledge of digital preservation practices, including digitization techniques, metadata standards, and digital asset management systems.
10. Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
11. Strong problem-solving skills and ability to adapt to changing technologies and evolving archival practices.
