Position: Archival Specialist

Reports To: Archiving Supervisor/Manager

Job Summary:
The Archival Specialist is responsible for managing and maintaining the archival records and collections within the Library and Information Science department. The role involves organizing, preserving, and providing access to historical documents, manuscripts, photographs, audiovisual materials, and other forms of archival records. The Archival Specialist will utilize their expertise in library science and archival principles to ensure the integrity, accessibility, and long-term preservation of these valuable materials.

Responsibilities:
1. Organize and categorize archival records and collections according to established standards and guidelines.
2. Assess, appraise, and select materials for preservation based on their historical, cultural, and research value.

4. Develop and implement strategies for the arrangement and description of archival materials to facilitate efficient retrieval and access.
5. Preserve and protect archival materials by implementing appropriate conservation and preservation techniques.

7. Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to acquire and process new archival collections.
8. Stay updated on current trends and best practices in archival management, digital preservation, and metadata standards.
9. Train and educate staff and volunteers on archival processes, procedures, and best practices.
10. Contribute to the development and implementation of digitization initiatives to enhance access to archival collections.
11. Ensure compliance with legal and ethical guidelines governing access to sensitive or restricted materials.

Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Library and Information Science, Archival Studies, or a related field.
2. Proven experience working with archival collections, preferably in a library or research institution.
3. Sound knowledge of archival principles, best practices, and standards, such as DACS, EAD, and MARC.
4. Familiarity with archival preservation techniques, including handling, storage, and conservation.
5. Proficiency in using archival management systems and databases for cataloging and retrieval.
6. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and projects.
7. Excellent attention to detail, accuracy, and quality control.
8. Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with team members, researchers, and donors.
