Position Summary:
The Digital Curation Specialist will be responsible for managing, organizing, preserving, and providing access to digital collections within the library's archives. This role requires a strong understanding of library and information science principles, as well as expertise in archiving and digital curation techniques. The Digital Curation Specialist will work closely with the library staff and other stakeholders to ensure the integrity, accessibility, and long-term sustainability of digital assets.
Responsibilities:
1. Develop and implement strategies for the curation, preservation, and management of digital collections.
2. Collaborate with stakeholders to identify, prioritize, and acquire digital assets, ensuring adherence to established policies and procedures.
3. Conduct comprehensive assessments of existing digital collections, identifying gaps, and recommending necessary actions for improvement.
4. Organize and catalog digital assets using appropriate metadata standards and controlled vocabularies.
5. Create and maintain accurate and detailed documentation related to digital curation processes, workflows, and preservation strategies.
6. Stay updated on emerging trends, best practices, and technologies in digital curation and preservation, and make recommendations for their implementation.
7. Collaborate with IT teams to ensure the security, storage, and backup of digital collections, while adhering to relevant data protection and privacy regulations.
8. Provide training and support to library staff and users on digital curation tools, techniques, and best practices.
9. Develop and maintain relationships with external partners, vendors, and relevant professional networks to stay informed about industry standards and opportunities for collaboration.
10. Participate in library committees and working groups, contributing expertise in digital curation to support the library's strategic initiatives.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Master's degree in Library and Information Science or related field.
2. Strong knowledge of library and information science principles, including archival theory and best practices.
3. Demonstrated experience in digital curation, preservation, and metadata management.
4. Proficiency in using digital curation tools, systems, and platforms.
5. Familiarity with metadata standards and controlled vocabularies, such as Dublin Core, METS, MODS, and LCSH.
6. Knowledge of digital preservation strategies, including migration, emulation, and digital rights management.
7. Understanding of copyright, intellectual property, and data protection laws relevant to digital collections.
8. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
9. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a proactive approach to identifying and resolving issues.
10. Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work closely with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
11. Demonstrated commitment to professional development and staying updated on industry trends and best practices.
