Job Summary:
The Taxonomist is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining taxonomies and classification systems to organize and categorize information resources within the Library and Information Science department. They will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure accurate and efficient access to information, enabling effective search and retrieval capabilities.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Develop and implement taxonomies and classification systems to organize and manage information resources.
2. Collaborate with subject matter experts to identify and define taxonomy requirements based on user needs and business objectives.
3. Design and maintain thesauri, controlled vocabularies, and authority files to enhance information retrieval and ensure consistency.
4. Conduct research to identify emerging trends and best practices in taxonomy management, and recommend improvements to existing taxonomies.
5. Audit and optimize existing taxonomies to improve search capabilities, ensuring accurate and efficient information retrieval.
6. Collaborate with technical teams to integrate taxonomies into information management systems, databases, and search engines.
7. Provide training and support to users on taxonomy structures, search techniques, and information retrieval best practices.
8. Collaborate with content creators to ensure the appropriate application of taxonomies during the creation and organization of content.
9. Perform quality assurance checks to ensure the accuracy and consistency of taxonomy structures and associated metadata.
10. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry standards, emerging technologies, and trends related to taxonomy and information management.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Library and Information Science, Information Management, or a related field.
2. Proven experience working as a Taxonomist or similar role in a library or information management setting.
3. Strong knowledge of taxonomy development principles, information organization, and classification systems.
4. Proficiency in using taxonomy management tools and software.
5. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment.
6. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex information and identify patterns and relationships.
7. Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data management and organization.
8. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey complex concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
9. Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously, adhering to deadlines and delivering high-quality results.
10. Familiarity with current trends and developments in library science, information management, and taxonomy standards.
11. Strong computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office Suite and familiarity with data management systems and databases.
