Position Overview:
The Metadata Specialist is responsible for managing and maintaining metadata standards and practices within the organization's information management systems. They will collaborate with various stakeholders to ensure accurate and consistent metadata representation, organization, and retrieval of digital assets and resources.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Develop and implement metadata strategies, standards, and procedures to ensure accurate and efficient information retrieval.
2. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to assess metadata requirements and define appropriate metadata schemas for various information resources.
3. Create and maintain metadata records, ensuring adherence to established standards and best practices.
4. Perform quality control checks on metadata to ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance with industry standards.
5. Conduct regular audits and reviews of metadata records to identify and resolve any inconsistencies or errors.
6. Support information management initiatives by providing expertise and guidance on metadata-related matters.
7. Stay updated with emerging trends and advancements in metadata standards, technologies, and practices.
8. Collaborate with IT teams to optimize metadata workflows and systems, ensuring efficient metadata creation, storage, and retrieval.
9. Assist in the development and implementation of metadata training programs for staff members and end-users.
10. Participate in the evaluation and selection of metadata management tools and software.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Library and Information Science, Information Management, or a related field.
2. Solid understanding of metadata principles, standards, and best practices (e.g., Dublin Core, MODS, METS).
3. Proficiency in metadata creation, mapping, and transformation using tools such as XML, RDF, or MARC.
4. Experience with metadata management systems, digital asset management systems, or library management systems.
5. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess and resolve metadata-related issues.
6. Excellent attention to detail, ensuring metadata accuracy and consistency.
7. Knowledge of information organization and retrieval principles.
8. Familiarity with controlled vocabularies, thesauri, and classification systems.
9. Ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams, effectively communicating and advocating for metadata best practices.
10. Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
