Job Summary:
The Film Archivist is responsible for the preservation, management, and cataloging of film assets within the film production department. This position requires a meticulous and detail-oriented individual with a deep understanding of film history, preservation techniques, and archival best practices. The Film Archivist will play a crucial role in maintaining the integrity and accessibility of the film collection, ensuring its longevity and availability for future research and use.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement film preservation strategies, adhering to industry standards and best practices.
- Conduct regular inspections of film assets to assess their condition and identify any potential preservation issues.
- Handle and process film materials with utmost care, including cleaning, repairing, and rehousing as necessary.
- Catalog and document film assets using specialized software and systems, capturing relevant metadata and ensuring accurate and comprehensive records.
- Organize and maintain physical and digital film collections, ensuring proper storage, labeling, and tracking of items.
- Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to identify and prioritize films for preservation, restoration, or digitization based on their historical, cultural, or commercial significance.
- Monitor environmental conditions within the film storage areas, including temperature, humidity, and lighting, to ensure optimal preservation conditions.
- Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to facilitate film distribution, lending, and access requests, ensuring compliance with copyright and licensing agreements.
- Assist in researching and providing information related to film assets for internal and external inquiries, exhibitions, or publications.
- Stay updated on industry trends, new preservation techniques, and emerging technologies in film archiving.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Film Studies, Library and Information Science, or a related field.
- Proven work experience as a Film Archivist or in a similar role, preferably within the entertainment or performing arts industry.
- In-depth knowledge of film history, genres, and production techniques.
- Familiarity with film preservation and restoration methodologies, including handling, cleaning, and storage.
- Proficiency in using film archival software and databases.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to handle sensitive and fragile materials with care.
- Knowledge of copyright laws and licensing agreements related to film assets.
- Familiarity with emerging digital preservation standards and technologies is a plus.
