Job Description: Urban Forester
Position Overview:
The Urban Forester is responsible for planning, managing, and coordinating urban forestry programs to ensure the sustainable management of trees and vegetation in urban areas. This role involves working closely with government agencies, community organizations, and other stakeholders to promote the health and preservation of urban forests. The Urban Forester will contribute to environmental conservation efforts and develop strategies to enhance the quality of urban landscapes.
Responsibilities:
1. Develop and implement urban forestry programs and initiatives to promote the preservation, maintenance, and expansion of urban forests.
2. Conduct tree inventories, assessments, and inspections to evaluate tree health, identify potential risks, and develop appropriate management plans.
3. Coordinate tree planting, maintenance, and removal activities, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and standards.
4. Collaborate with municipal departments, community groups, and other stakeholders to develop and implement urban forestry policies, guidelines, and best practices.
5. Provide technical expertise and guidance to address tree-related issues, including tree preservation during construction, disease and pest management, and storm damage response.
6. Offer educational and outreach programs to raise awareness and promote community involvement in urban forestry initiatives.
7. Conduct research and stay updated on emerging trends, techniques, and technologies in urban forestry and related fields.
8. Prepare reports, budgets, and grant proposals to secure funding for urban forestry projects.
9. Maintain accurate records and databases to track tree inventory, maintenance activities, and program outcomes.
10. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to integrate urban forestry principles into urban planning and development projects.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Environmental Science, Forestry, or a related field.
2. Proven experience in urban forestry, arboriculture, or related roles.
3. Strong knowledge of tree species, urban forest management principles, and best practices.
4. Familiarity with local, state, and federal regulations related to urban forestry.
5. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
6. Proficiency in utilizing software applications and technology for tree inventory, management, and analysis.
7. Ability to conduct tree risk assessments and develop appropriate mitigation strategies.
8. Strong project management skills, with the ability to plan, prioritize, and execute multiple tasks simultaneously.
9. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, displaying flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic work environment.
10. Valid driver's license and ability to travel within the region as required.
