Job Summary:
The Forensic Chemist Lead is responsible for overseeing and leading forensic chemistry operations within the Law and Criminal Justice department's Forensic Science division. The incumbent will apply advanced chemical and analytical techniques to perform accurate and timely analysis of physical evidence related to criminal investigations. The Forensic Chemist Lead will collaborate with a team of scientists, technicians, and investigators to ensure the highest quality forensic analysis and contribute to the success of criminal justice proceedings.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Lead and supervise a team of forensic chemists to ensure efficient and effective laboratory operations.
2. Plan, organize, and prioritize work assignments to meet established deadlines and quality standards.
3. Conduct forensic analyses on a wide range of physical evidence, including but not limited to drugs, toxic substances, trace evidence, and unknown substances.
4. Apply advanced chemical and analytical techniques, such as gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, and spectroscopy, to analyze evidence samples.
5. Maintain accurate and detailed records of all laboratory procedures, observations, and test results.
6. Provide expert testimony in court proceedings, presenting scientific findings in a clear and understandable manner.
7. Collaborate with law enforcement agencies, legal teams, and other stakeholders to exchange information and provide expert guidance.
8. Stay updated on the latest forensic science advancements and ensure compliance with industry standards, regulations, and best practices.
9. Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the forensic chemistry laboratory.
10. Manage and maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring proper calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree or higher in Forensic Science, Chemistry, or a related field.
2. Minimum of 5 years of experience working as a Forensic Chemist or in a related role.
3. In-depth knowledge of forensic chemistry principles, analytical techniques, and instrumentation.
4. Strong understanding of the legal and ethical implications of forensic analysis and evidence handling.
5. Excellent leadership and team management skills, with the ability to effectively guide and mentor a team.
6. Proficiency in using advanced analytical instruments and software for data analysis and interpretation.
7. Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills to maintain accurate records and manage multiple cases simultaneously.
8. Ability to communicate complex scientific concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
9. Demonstrated ability to provide expert testimony in court, with a solid understanding of courtroom procedures and rules of evidence.
10. Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities to analyze complex evidence and draw sound conclusions.
