Job Summary:
The K9 Officer is responsible for ensuring public safety and enforcing laws by utilizing the specialized skills of a trained canine partner to detect and deter criminal activities. This position involves performing law enforcement duties, maintaining the welfare and training of the assigned K9 partner, and collaborating with other law enforcement personnel to maintain a safe community.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Perform law enforcement duties, including but not limited to patrol, search, and apprehension using a trained K9 partner.
2. Conduct proactive patrols to prevent and detect criminal activities, respond to emergencies, and enforce laws and regulations.
3. Utilize K9 partner to detect narcotics, explosives, or other contraband as required.
4. Assist with crowd control, public events, and other community activities as assigned.
5. Respond to calls for assistance, accidents, and emergencies to provide immediate support and maintain public safety.
6. Collect and preserve evidence, prepare detailed reports, and testify in court proceedings as necessary.
7. Maintain the welfare of the assigned K9 partner, including feeding, grooming, exercising, and administering medical care as needed.
8. Train and develop the K9 partner to maintain a high level of proficiency in specialized areas such as obedience, tracking, and suspect apprehension.
9. Collaborate with other law enforcement personnel and agencies to exchange information, coordinate investigations, and support joint operations.
10. Stay updated on current law enforcement techniques, K9 training methodologies, and relevant laws and regulations.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. High school diploma or equivalent (GED). Some college coursework in criminal justice or a related field is preferred but not required.
2. Completion of a recognized law enforcement academy and certification as a sworn law enforcement officer.
3. Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
4. Minimum of 3 years of experience as a law enforcement officer, preferably with K9 handling experience.
5. Demonstrated ability to handle and control a trained police service dog in various environments and situations.
6. Strong knowledge of law enforcement principles, practices, and procedures.
7. Excellent physical fitness and ability to perform strenuous activities and handle potentially dangerous situations.
8. Ability to work effectively as part of a team and adapt to changing priorities and situations.
9. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact with diverse individuals and resolve conflicts effectively.
10. Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, and respond to emergency situations when necessary.
