Job Description: Legal Assistant (Law and Criminal Justice)
Position Overview:
The legal assistant will provide high-quality administrative and clerical support to attorneys and legal professionals in a fast-paced law firm specializing in law and criminal justice matters. The role requires exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to handle confidential and sensitive information. The legal assistant will also be responsible for managing administrative tasks, maintaining legal documents, conducting legal research, and assisting with case preparation.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Organize and maintain legal documents, including case files, correspondence, pleadings, and other relevant materials.
2. Prepare and proofread legal documents such as briefs, contracts, agreements, and client correspondence.
3. Conduct legal research using various resources to support case preparation and stay updated on legal developments.
4. Assist attorneys in drafting legal documents, including legal memoranda, pleadings, and motions.
5. Schedule and coordinate meetings, depositions, and court appearances, ensuring all relevant parties are informed.
6. Maintain a detailed calendar for attorneys, including tracking court deadlines, hearings, and other important dates.
7. Communicate and collaborate effectively with clients, witnesses, court personnel, and other legal professionals.
8. File legal documents with courts, agencies, and other relevant entities, ensuring compliance with deadlines and procedures.
9. Prepare and organize exhibits, evidence, and other materials for trial or other legal proceedings.
10. Provide administrative support, including answering phone calls, managing emails, and handling general office tasks.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Law, Criminal Justice, or a related field.
2. Proven experience as a legal assistant or in a similar role within the legal industry.
3. Strong knowledge of legal terminology, court procedures, and legal research methods.
4. Proficiency in using legal databases, research tools, and case management software.
5. Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and multitask effectively.
6. Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy in preparing legal documents and maintaining records.
7. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with clients and colleagues.
8. Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
9. Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and other relevant software.
10. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think critically and provide sound recommendations.
