Job Description: Special Education Paraprofessional
Position Summary:
The Special Education Paraprofessional will work closely with special education teachers to provide support and assistance in a classroom setting. The primary responsibility of this role is to ensure that students with special needs receive the necessary guidance and individualized attention to achieve their academic and personal goals.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Collaborate with special education teachers to implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and facilitate the inclusion of students with special needs in regular classroom activities.
2. Provide academic support to students with special needs, including assisting with assignments, reinforcing concepts, and adapting instructional materials as needed.
3. Support students in developing social and emotional skills, fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment.
4. Assist with behavior management strategies and interventions, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of students at all times.
5. Monitor and document student progress, observations, and behaviors, reporting any concerns to the special education teacher.
6. Foster effective communication and collaboration with parents, guardians, and other professionals involved in the students' educational journey.
7. Aid in the implementation of assistive technology and adaptive equipment to enhance students' access to the curriculum.
8. Assist with the supervision of students during recess, lunch, and other non-instructional periods, ensuring appropriate behavior and safety protocols are followed.
9. Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills related to special education best practices.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. High school diploma or equivalent; associate's or bachelor's degree in special education or related field preferred.
2. Prior experience working with individuals with special needs, particularly in an educational setting.
3. Strong understanding of special education principles, laws, and regulations.
4. Knowledge of behavior management techniques and strategies to support students with challenging behaviors.
5. Ability to adapt instructional materials and assistive technology to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities.
6. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, parents, and a multidisciplinary team.
7. Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for working with individuals with special needs.
8. Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all aspects of the role.
9. Physical stamina to perform duties that may involve lifting, bending, and assisting students with mobility.
