Job Summary:
The Special Education Assistant works closely with the Special Education Teacher to support the educational and behavioral needs of students with special needs. The Assistant provides assistance in implementing individualized education plans (IEPs) and ensuring a supportive learning environment for students. This role requires strong communication skills, patience, empathy, and the ability to adapt to the unique needs of each student.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Assist the Special Education Teacher in implementing specialized instructional strategies and interventions outlined in students' IEPs.
2. Support students with daily activities, including personal care, feeding, mobility, and communication, as required.
3. Collaborate with the Special Education Teacher to develop and modify instructional materials to meet individual student needs.
4. Maintain a safe and inclusive learning environment, proactively addressing behavioral issues and providing behavior management support to students.
5. Implement behavior intervention plans and strategies, as directed by the Special Education Teacher.
6. Foster positive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues, demonstrating empathy, patience, and respect.
7. Support students during transitions between classes, activities, and transportation, ensuring their safety and comfort.
8. Assist in the preparation and organization of classroom materials, equipment, and resources.
9. Document student progress, behavior, and incidents accurately and promptly, as required.
10. Attend and actively participate in team meetings, parent-teacher conferences, and professional development sessions, as requested.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. High school diploma or equivalent; associate's degree in special education or related field is preferred.
2. Previous experience working with students with special needs is highly desirable.
3. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with students, parents, and colleagues.
4. Patience, empathy, and the ability to maintain a calm and supportive demeanor in challenging situations.
5. Knowledge of and ability to implement specialized instructional strategies and interventions for students with special needs.
6. Understanding of behavior management techniques and ability to implement behavior intervention plans.
7. Flexibility and adaptability to meet the changing needs of students and the classroom environment.
8. Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
9. Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards in working with students and their families.
10. Physical stamina and the ability to assist students with physical disabilities, as required.
