Job Summary:
The Special Education Speech Therapist is responsible for evaluating, diagnosing, and providing specialized speech and language therapy services to students with disabilities in a special education setting. The incumbent will work collaboratively with teachers, parents, and other professionals to develop and implement individualized treatment plans aimed at improving students' communication skills and overall academic performance.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Conduct comprehensive assessments to identify speech, language, and communication disorders in students with special needs.
2. Develop individualized education plans (IEPs) based on assessment findings, outlining therapy goals and objectives.
3. Provide specialized speech and language therapy services to students with disabilities, utilizing evidence-based techniques and interventions.
4. Implement intervention strategies to address speech and language disorders, including articulation, fluency, voice, and receptive/expressive language challenges.
5. Collaborate with teachers, parents, and other professionals to ensure a coordinated approach in supporting students' speech and language needs.
6. Monitor and document students' progress, adjusting therapy plans as necessary to meet individual goals and objectives.
7. Conduct periodic reassessments to evaluate students' progress and determine the effectiveness of therapy interventions.
8. Provide guidance and support to teachers and parents on strategies to enhance students' communication skills in the classroom and at home.
9. Stay up-to-date with the latest research and advancements in the field of special education speech therapy, incorporating new techniques and approaches into practice.
10. Maintain accurate and confidential records of therapy sessions, progress reports, and other relevant documentation.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology or Communication Disorders from an accredited institution.
2. Valid state license or certification in Speech-Language Pathology.
3. Certification in Special Education or relevant field preferred.
4. Proven experience working with students with special needs, particularly in a special education setting.
5. Sound knowledge of various communication disorders and their impact on academic performance.
6. Proficient in conducting assessments and developing individualized education plans (IEPs).
7. Strong understanding of evidence-based speech therapy techniques and interventions.
8. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills to work effectively with students, parents, and multidisciplinary teams.
9. Ability to adapt therapy plans and approaches to meet individual students' needs.
10. Exceptional organizational and time management skills to prioritize workload and meet deadlines.
11. High level of professionalism, integrity, and confidentiality in handling sensitive student information.
