Job Description: Adaptive Physical Education Teacher
Position Overview:
The Adaptive Physical Education Teacher is responsible for providing specialized physical education instruction to students with disabilities in a school setting. This role requires a deep understanding of special education practices and the ability to create and implement individualized physical education programs for students with diverse needs.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Develop and implement individualized adaptive physical education programs based on students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and specific needs.
2. Adapt and modify physical education curriculum and activities to ensure inclusivity and accessibility for students with disabilities.
3. Provide direct instruction to students in various physical activities and sports, focusing on skill development, coordination, strength, and overall physical fitness.
4. Assess students' physical abilities, progress, and challenges, and adjust instructional strategies accordingly.
5. Collaborate with other special education teachers, general education teachers, therapists, and support staff to ensure seamless integration of adaptive physical education into students' overall academic and therapeutic plans.
6. Support students in developing social skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship through inclusive physical activities.
7. Monitor and ensure students' safety during physical education classes, including implementing necessary accommodations and modifications to prevent injury.
8. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of students' progress, attendance, and behavior related to adaptive physical education.
9. Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding students' progress, achievements, and any concerns related to adaptive physical education.
10. Attend and actively participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, team meetings, and professional development sessions to stay updated on best practices and legal requirements in special education.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Special Education, Physical Education, or a related field.
2. Valid teaching certification/license in Special Education or Physical Education.
3. Proven experience working with students with disabilities, preferably in an educational setting.
4. In-depth knowledge of adaptive physical education practices, methodologies, and instructional strategies.
5. Ability to assess students' physical abilities and design individualized programs to meet their specific needs.
6. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with students, parents/guardians, colleagues, and other stakeholders.
7. Ability to adapt and modify physical education activities to accommodate diverse abilities and learning styles.
8. Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and best practices in special education, including IDEA and Section 504.
9. Excellent organizational skills to maintain accurate records, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines.
10. Demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment for students with disabilities.
