Position Overview:
The Assistive Technology Specialist will play a vital role in supporting students with special needs by assessing, implementing, and providing ongoing support for assistive technology devices and services. As a member of the special education team, the specialist will collaborate with teachers, parents, and other professionals to ensure students have access to appropriate assistive technology tools and resources that enhance their learning experience and help them achieve their educational goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct comprehensive assessments to identify individual student needs and determine appropriate assistive technology solutions.
- Collaborate with teachers, parents, and other professionals to develop individualized education plans (IEPs) that incorporate assistive technology interventions and strategies.
- Research, evaluate, and recommend assistive technology devices, software applications, and other resources to support students' diverse learning needs.
- Provide training and ongoing professional development to teachers and staff on the effective use of assistive technology tools.
- Install, configure, and troubleshoot assistive technology hardware and software to ensure optimal functionality.
- Collaborate with IT support teams to ensure the compatibility and accessibility of assistive technology across various platforms and devices.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of assistive technology interventions and make necessary adjustments to meet students' evolving needs.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of assistive technology trends, industry standards, and best practices through continuous professional development and attending relevant conferences or workshops.
- Keep accurate records of assessments, interventions, and progress related to assistive technology services provided to students.
- Stay informed about federal and state laws, regulations, and guidelines regarding assistive technology to ensure compliance.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Special Education, Rehabilitation Engineering, Assistive Technology, or related field.
- In-depth knowledge of a wide range of assistive technology devices, software applications, and resources suitable for students with special needs.
- Familiarity with various disabilities, learning disorders, and physical limitations that may require assistive technology solutions.
- Ability to conduct thorough assessments to determine individual student needs and match them with appropriate assistive technology tools.
- Strong problem-solving skills to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to assistive technology hardware and software.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with students, teachers, parents, and other professionals.
- Proficiency in providing training and ongoing support to educators on the effective use of assistive technology.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
- Strong understanding of federal and state laws, regulations, and guidelines related to assistive technology in education.
