Job Summary:
The Middle School Counselor is responsible for providing comprehensive counseling services to students in a middle school setting. This role involves assisting students in overcoming personal, social, and academic challenges, as well as supporting their overall well-being and development. The Middle School Counselor collaborates with parents, teachers, and other school personnel to ensure the successful academic and emotional growth of students.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Conduct individual and group counseling sessions to address students' academic, personal, and social needs.
2. Assess students' strengths, weaknesses, and challenges using various assessment tools, and develop appropriate intervention strategies.
3. Provide guidance and support to students in making informed academic and career choices, helping them explore different educational and vocational opportunities.
4. Collaborate with teachers, parents, and other school staff to develop individualized plans for students with special needs or behavioral issues.
5. Implement preventative programs and initiatives focused on school-wide mental health and social-emotional learning.
6. Facilitate conflict resolution and mediation between students, promoting positive peer relationships and a safe school environment.
7. Educate students on topics such as bullying prevention, mental health awareness, and stress management through workshops and classroom presentations.
8. Maintain accurate and confidential student records, documenting counseling sessions, interventions, and progress notes.
9. Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, contributing to the development and implementation of student support plans.
10. Stay up-to-date with current trends and research in school counseling, attending professional development workshops and conferences as necessary.
Skills and Qualifications:
1. Master's degree in School Counseling or a related field from an accredited institution.
2. Relevant state certification or licensure as a School Counselor.
3. Proven experience working as a School Counselor, preferably in a middle school setting.
4. Strong knowledge of counseling theories, techniques, and best practices in adolescent counseling.
5. Excellent communication and active listening skills, with the ability to establish rapport with students, parents, and staff.
6. Empathy and understanding of the unique challenges faced by middle school students.
7. Ability to assess students' emotional and educational needs and develop appropriate intervention plans.
8. Familiarity with relevant laws, regulations, and ethical guidelines related to student counseling.
9. Proficiency in using counseling assessment tools and technology to track student progress.
10. Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
