Job Description: High School Counselor
Position Summary:
The High School Counselor will provide comprehensive counseling services to high school students, assisting them in their academic, personal, and career development. This role requires excellent communication skills, strong interpersonal abilities, and a deep understanding of adolescent development. The High School Counselor will collaborate with students, parents/guardians, teachers, and administrators to foster a positive and supportive school environment.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct individual and group counseling sessions to address students' academic, personal, and social-emotional needs.
- Assist students in developing and implementing academic and career plans, including course selection, college/university applications, and vocational training opportunities.
- Provide guidance and support to students in navigating personal challenges, such as mental health issues, substance abuse, bullying, and family conflicts.
- Collaborate with teachers and administrators to identify and address students' academic and behavioral concerns.
- Develop and implement prevention and intervention programs to promote positive student behavior and well-being.
- Conduct assessments and evaluations to identify students' strengths, interests, and areas for improvement.
- Assist students in developing essential life skills, such as decision-making, problem-solving, and conflict resolution.
- Maintain accurate and confidential student records, documenting counseling sessions, interventions, and progress.
- Communicate regularly with parents/guardians to provide updates on students' academic progress and well-being.
- Stay updated on current trends and research in the field of school counseling to enhance counseling techniques and services provided.
Qualifications:
- Master's degree in School Counseling or a related field.
- Valid state certification/license in School Counseling.
- Proven experience working as a High School Counselor or in a similar role.
- In-depth knowledge of adolescent development, mental health issues, and career development.
- Strong understanding of educational systems, college admissions processes, and financial aid opportunities.
- Excellent communication and active listening skills.
- Ability to build rapport, trust, and maintain confidentiality with students.
- Proficient in conducting assessments and using various counseling techniques.
- Familiarity with relevant laws, regulations, and ethical guidelines governing school counseling.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with students, parents/guardians, teachers, and administrators.
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
