Job Summary:
The Guidance Counselor is responsible for providing comprehensive counseling services to students in an educational setting. This role involves assisting students in their personal, social, academic, and career development to support their overall well-being and success. The Guidance Counselor collaborates with teachers, parents, and other educational professionals to create a positive and inclusive learning environment.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Conduct individual and group counseling sessions to address student needs, including academic, career, and personal/social development.
2. Provide guidance and support to students in the areas of goal-setting, decision-making, and problem-solving.
3. Assess student strengths, interests, and abilities to assist in academic and career planning.
4. Assist students in developing effective study skills, time management techniques, and organizational strategies.
5. Collaborate with teachers to develop appropriate interventions for students experiencing academic difficulties.
6. Conduct assessments and interpret data to identify students' academic and emotional needs.
7. Implement and evaluate school-wide counseling programs to promote student well-being and positive behavior.
8. Foster positive relationships with students, parents, and teachers to enhance student success and engagement.
9. Serve as a resource for parents and guardians, providing guidance on academic and behavioral concerns.
10. Coordinate and facilitate college and career exploration activities, including college fairs, visits, and scholarship opportunities.
11. Stay up-to-date with current educational and counseling trends to provide relevant and effective support to students.
12. Maintain accurate and confidential student records, ensuring compliance with legal and ethical standards.
Qualifications:
1. Master's degree in Counseling or a related field from an accredited institution.
2. State licensure or certification as a School Counselor.
3. Proven experience working as a Guidance Counselor in an educational setting.
4. In-depth knowledge of counseling theories, techniques, and best practices applicable to working with students.
5. Understanding of academic and career development processes, as well as college admission requirements.
6. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to establish rapport with students, parents, and staff.
7. Strong organizational and time management abilities to handle multiple responsibilities effectively.
8. Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion in handling sensitive student information.
9. Proficiency in using counseling software and computer applications to manage student records and data.
10. Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the school community.
