Job Summary:
The School Counselor is responsible for providing comprehensive counseling services to students in order to support their academic, personal, and social development. This role requires effective collaboration with students, parents, teachers, and other school staff to ensure a safe and nurturing learning environment. The School Counselor will also assist students in exploring career options and making informed decisions about their future.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Provide individual and group counseling sessions to address students' personal, social, academic, and career development needs.
2. Assist students in developing strategies to improve study skills, time management, and goal setting.
3. Conduct assessments and evaluations to identify students' strengths, areas for improvement, and any potential mental health concerns.
4. Collaborate with teachers, parents, and other school staff to develop and implement intervention plans for students facing academic or behavioral challenges.
5. Support students in developing decision-making and problem-solving skills, and encourage positive behavioral choices.
6. Deliver classroom presentations and workshops on topics such as bullying prevention, stress management, and career exploration.
7. Help students set realistic academic and career goals, and provide guidance on course selection and post-secondary education options.
8. Maintain accurate and confidential student records, including progress notes, assessments, and intervention plans.
9. Stay updated on current trends and best practices in school counseling through professional development opportunities.
10. Participate in school-wide initiatives aimed at fostering a positive school culture and promoting student well-being.
11. Collaborate with community organizations and resources to provide additional support services for students and their families.
Qualifications and Skills:
1. Master's degree in School Counseling, Guidance Counseling, or a related field.
2. Valid state certification or licensure as a School Counselor.
3. Strong knowledge of counseling theories, techniques, and best practices in student support services.
4. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trusting relationships with students, parents, and staff.
5. Demonstrated understanding of cultural diversity and the ability to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds.
6. Sound judgment and decision-making skills, with the ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
7. Proficient in using technology and counseling software to maintain accurate records and deliver effective counseling services.
8. Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
9. Strong organizational and time management skills to effectively manage caseload and meet deadlines.
10. Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and ethical standards related to school counseling.
