Job Summary:
The Zoo Director is responsible for overseeing the management and operations of the zoo, ensuring the highest standards of animal care, conservation, education, and visitor experience. This position requires a strong background in veterinary medicine, animal health management, and leadership skills.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Develop and implement strategic plans to ensure the overall success and growth of the zoo.
2. Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations related to animal health, welfare, and safety.
3. Manage the animal health program, including preventative care, medical treatments, nutrition, and husbandry practices.
4. Coordinate with veterinary staff to develop and implement comprehensive animal health protocols.
5. Oversee the welfare and behavior management of animals, ensuring appropriate enrichment programs are implemented.
6. Collaborate with conservation organizations and participate in relevant research and conservation projects.
7. Develop and maintain strong relationships with partner organizations, government agencies, and stakeholders.
8. Lead and manage a diverse team, including hiring, training, performance evaluations, and professional development.
9. Develop and manage the zoo's budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility and effective resource allocation.
10. Plan and execute educational programs, events, and exhibits to promote public awareness and conservation efforts.
11. Ensure the zoo's facilities, exhibits, and infrastructure are well-maintained and meet industry standards.
12. Monitor visitor experiences and implement improvements to enhance guest satisfaction and educational value.
13. Foster a positive and inclusive work environment, promoting teamwork, open communication, and employee engagement.
14. Stay updated on industry trends, advancements, and best practices in animal health management and conservation.
15. Prepare and present reports to the CEO and board of directors on zoo activities, progress, and financial performance.
Qualifications and Skills:
1. Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree.
2. Valid veterinary license and registration.
3. Proven experience in animal health management, preferably in a zoo or similar animal facility.
4. Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate a diverse team.
5. Excellent knowledge of animal welfare regulations and standards.
6. Sound understanding of conservation principles, practices, and initiatives.
7. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with staff, visitors, and stakeholders.
8. Budgeting and financial management skills.
9. Demonstrated ability to develop and execute strategic plans.
10. Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
11. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
12. Proficient computer skills and knowledge of relevant software applications.
