Job Summary:
The Surgical Veterinary Technician is responsible for providing high-quality surgical care and technical support in a veterinary hospital setting. This role involves assisting veterinarians during surgical procedures, ensuring the maintenance and sterilization of surgical equipment, and maintaining accurate medical records. The Surgical Veterinary Technician also provides post-operative care and monitoring of patients, ensuring their wellbeing and recovery.
Responsibilities:
1. Assist veterinarians during surgical procedures by providing technical support, including but not limited to, surgical preparation, anesthesia administration, and instrument handling.
2. Maintain a clean and sterile surgical environment, ensuring the proper sterilization, preparation, and organization of surgical equipment and supplies.
3. Prepare surgical patients for procedures, including pre-operative assessments, administration of medications, and placement of intravenous catheters.
4. Monitor patients during surgeries, maintaining accurate records of vital signs and anesthesia levels, and promptly reporting any abnormalities to the veterinarian.
5. Administer post-operative care to patients, including proper wound management, pain management, and monitoring of recovery progress.
6. Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records, including patient history, surgical procedures, medications administered, and post-operative care instructions.
7. Educate clients on post-operative care and medication administration, ensuring they have a thorough understanding of their pet's recovery needs.
8. Collaborate with the veterinary team to ensure smooth workflow and provide assistance in other areas of the hospital as needed.
9. Adhere to all safety protocols, infection control guidelines, and hospital policies to maintain a safe and healthy work environment.
10. Stay updated on advancements in surgical techniques, equipment, and veterinary medicine through continuing education and professional development activities.
Qualifications and Skills:
1. High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's degree in Veterinary Technology preferred.
2. Certification as a Veterinary Technician (CVT, RVT, or LVT) required.
3. Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Surgical Veterinary Technician in a veterinary hospital or clinic setting.
4. In-depth knowledge of surgical procedures, anesthesia protocols, and sterile techniques.
5. Proficient in the use and maintenance of surgical instruments, equipment, and monitoring devices.
6. Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills to maintain accurate records and manage multiple tasks.
7. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with veterinarians, fellow technicians, and clients.
8. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a calm and professional demeanor.
9. Strong problem-solving skills to handle emergency situations and make quick decisions.
10. Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development and staying up-to-date with the latest advancements in veterinary medicine.
