Job Summary:
The Veterinary Oncology Technician is responsible for providing comprehensive support in the diagnosis, treatment, and care of animals undergoing oncology treatments. Working closely with the Veterinary Oncology Specialist, this role plays a crucial part in ensuring the efficient and effective delivery of veterinary oncology services.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Assisting in the diagnosis and staging of oncology cases by performing physical examinations, collecting samples for further analysis, and conducting relevant diagnostic tests.
2. Administering medications, chemotherapy drugs, and other treatments as directed by the Veterinary Oncology Specialist.
3. Monitoring and documenting patients' conditions, including vital signs, response to treatment, and potential side effects.
4. Assisting in the preparation and execution of radiation therapy treatments under the guidance of the Veterinary Oncology Specialist.
5. Conducting routine procedures such as venipuncture, intravenous catheter placement, and wound care.
6. Maintaining accurate medical records and updating patient charts to ensure clear communication between the veterinary team.
7. Educating pet owners on the administration of medications, treatment plans, and potential side effects.
8. Assisting in the management of veterinary oncology inventory, including ordering and organizing necessary supplies and medications.
9. Supporting the Veterinary Oncology Specialist during surgical procedures, including anesthesia monitoring and surgical assistance.
10. Collaborating with the veterinary team to ensure a safe and clean working environment, including proper disposal of hazardous materials.
11. Participating in continuing education opportunities and staying up-to-date with advancements in veterinary oncology.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Diploma or associate degree in Veterinary Technology or related field.
2. Certification as a Veterinary Technician or Veterinary Oncology Technician is preferred.
3. Minimum of 2 years of experience working as a Veterinary Technician, with exposure to oncology cases considered a strong asset.
4. Proficient knowledge of veterinary medicine, oncology treatments, and medical terminology.
5. Demonstrated ability to perform various veterinary procedures, such as venipuncture, catheter placement, and wound care.
6. Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills to maintain accurate medical records and manage inventory.
7. Effective communication skills to interact with pet owners, veterinary team members, and other stakeholders.
8. Ability to handle and restrain animals safely and with compassion.
9. Knowledge of radiation safety protocols and experience in assisting with radiation therapy treatments is preferred.
10. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced veterinary environment.
11. Flexibility to work occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
