Job Description: Veterinary Dermatology Technician
Position Summary:
The Veterinary Dermatology Technician plays a crucial role in providing exceptional care to animals with dermatological conditions within a veterinary medicine setting. This position requires a highly skilled and knowledgeable individual with a passion for veterinary dermatology. The Veterinary Dermatology Technician works closely with the veterinary dermatologist to assist in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with dermatological disorders.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Assisting the veterinary dermatologist in performing comprehensive dermatological examinations, including collecting patient history, conducting skin evaluations, and documenting findings accurately.
2. Assisting with diagnostic procedures such as skin scrapings, fungal cultures, trichograms, cytology, and biopsy sample collections.
3. Preparing patients for specialized dermatological procedures, ensuring proper handling, restraint, and patient comfort during examinations and treatments.
4. Administering topical and oral medications as prescribed by the veterinary dermatologist, in accordance with established protocols.
5. Assisting in the maintenance and calibration of specialized equipment used in dermatological procedures, ensuring their proper functioning and cleanliness.
6. Conducting basic laboratory tests and processing samples for analysis, including bloodwork, skin cultures, and allergy testing.
7. Providing excellent client service by answering questions, addressing concerns, and providing clear instructions on at-home care and follow-up appointments.
8. Maintaining accurate and detailed patient records, including medical histories, treatment plans, and client communication.
9. Collaborating with the veterinary dermatologist and veterinary nursing team to develop and implement patient care plans, ensuring seamless coordination of treatments.
10. Assisting in educating clients on dermatological conditions, preventive care, and treatment options.
11. Maintaining a clean and organized work environment, including exam rooms, treatment areas, and equipment storage areas.
12. Staying up-to-date with the latest advancements in veterinary dermatology through continuous professional development and attending relevant conferences or workshops.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Associate's degree in Veterinary Technology or a related field.
2. Certification as a Veterinary Technician (CVT, RVT, LVT) or eligibility to become certified.
3. Minimum of 2 years of experience working as a Veterinary Technician, preferably with exposure to dermatological cases.
4. Strong knowledge of dermatological conditions, treatments, and diagnostic procedures.
5. Proficiency in performing diagnostic tests such as skin scrapings, cytology, trichograms, and biopsies.
6. Exceptional attention to detail and ability to accurately document patient information and treatment plans.
7. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to effectively communicate complex medical information to clients.
8. Strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple cases simultaneously.
9. Ability to work well within a team environment and collaborate effectively with veterinary dermatologists, veterinarians, and other veterinary technicians.
10. Compassionate and empathetic nature, with a genuine love for animals and a commitment to their well-being.
11. Proficiency in using veterinary practice management software and electronic medical records systems.
12. Flexibility to work occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
