Job Summary:
The Food Animal Veterinarian will provide comprehensive veterinary care and support to ensure the health and well-being of food-producing animals. This role involves diagnosing, treating, and preventing diseases, conducting herd health management, and promoting sustainable animal agriculture practices. The Food Animal Veterinarian will work closely with farmers, producers, and other veterinary professionals to ensure the highest standards of animal health and welfare.
Responsibilities:
1. Conduct routine and emergency veterinary care for food-producing animals, including dairy and beef cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, and poultry.
2. Perform physical examinations, administer vaccinations, conduct disease testing, and provide treatment for illnesses and injuries.
3. Develop and implement herd health management plans to optimize animal health, productivity, and welfare.
4. Provide expertise in nutrition, reproduction, and biosecurity practices to improve herd management and productivity.
5. Assist with obstetrical procedures, including calving, lambing, and farrowing.
6. Perform surgical procedures related to food animal health, such as castrations, dehorning, and cesarean sections.
7. Collaborate with farmers and producers to develop and implement biosecurity protocols to prevent and control disease outbreaks.
8. Conduct on-farm visits and provide recommendations for animal welfare, housing, and environmental conditions.
9. Educate farm owners and staff on best practices for animal health, disease prevention, and responsible antibiotic use.
10. Maintain accurate medical records, including diagnostic test results, treatments, and herd health management plans.
11. Stay updated with the latest advancements and research in food animal veterinary medicine.
12. Adhere to all applicable laws, regulations, and ethical standards related to veterinary medicine.
Qualifications:
1. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an accredited veterinary school.
2. Valid license to practice veterinary medicine in the relevant jurisdiction.
3. Proven experience working as a food animal veterinarian, preferably in a mixed-animal or food animal exclusive practice.
4. In-depth knowledge of food animal health, production, and management practices.
5. Proficiency in performing routine veterinary procedures, surgeries, and obstetrical interventions.
6. Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills to effectively diagnose and treat food animal diseases.
7. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with farmers, producers, and other stakeholders.
8. Ability to develop and implement herd health management plans, including vaccination programs and biosecurity protocols.
9. Knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, and standards related to animal welfare, antibiotic use, and biosecurity.
10. Detail-oriented with the ability to maintain accurate and organized medical records.
11. Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced and challenging environment.
12. Willingness to stay updated with advancements in food animal veterinary medicine through continuing education and professional development.
