Job Description: Maritime Safety Specialist
Position Summary:
The Maritime Safety Specialist is responsible for ensuring compliance with safety regulations and promoting a culture of continual improvement in maritime operations. This role requires strong knowledge of maritime safety procedures, regulations, and industry best practices. The Maritime Safety Specialist will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to develop, implement, and monitor safety protocols to mitigate risks and maintain a safe working environment within the transportation and logistics industry.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Develop and implement comprehensive safety programs and policies for maritime operations, ensuring compliance with national and international regulations.
2. Conduct regular inspections and audits of vessels, equipment, and facilities to identify potential safety hazards and non-compliance issues.
3. Collaborate with internal stakeholders to establish safety objectives, targets, and key performance indicators (KPIs).
4. Provide guidance and training to maritime staff on proper safety protocols, emergency procedures, and the use of safety equipment.
5. Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-miss events, identifying root causes and recommending corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
6. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of maritime safety regulations, industry trends, and emerging technologies, and ensure compliance with all relevant standards.
7. Develop and deliver safety-related training programs for employees, contractors, and other relevant stakeholders.
8. Participate in safety committees, industry forums, and regulatory meetings to represent the organization's interests and stay informed about industry developments.
9. Conduct risk assessments and develop mitigation plans to minimize hazards and ensure the safety of personnel, vessels, cargo, and the environment.
10. Monitor and analyze safety data and metrics, preparing reports and recommendations for management to drive continuous improvement in safety performance.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Maritime Studies, Marine Engineering, or a related field.
2. Minimum of 5 years of experience in maritime safety, preferably within the transportation and logistics industry.
3. In-depth knowledge of international maritime safety regulations, such as SOLAS, ISM Code, and ISPS Code.
4. Familiarity with industry-specific safety management systems (SMS) and risk assessment methodologies.
5. Strong understanding of emergency response procedures and incident investigation techniques.
6. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey complex safety concepts to diverse audiences.
7. Proven ability to lead safety initiatives, implement safety programs, and drive a safety-focused culture.
8. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify potential risks and develop effective mitigation strategies.
9. Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and build positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
10. Professional certifications in maritime safety, such as NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent, are highly desirable.
