Job Description: Energy and Utilities > Utility Management > Utility Health and Safety Officer
The Utility Health and Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring the implementation and maintenance of comprehensive health and safety programs within the energy and utilities sector. This role requires an individual with extensive knowledge and understanding of safety regulations, industry best practices, and a strong commitment to promoting a safe work environment.
Responsibilities:
1. Develop and implement health and safety policies, procedures, and guidelines in line with regulatory requirements and industry standards.
2. Conduct regular inspections and audits to identify potential hazards, assess risks, and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
3. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and deliver safety training programs, including new employee orientations, refresher courses, and specialized training for high-risk activities.
4. Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-misses to determine causes and recommend corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence.
5. Maintain accurate records of safety-related incidents, inspections, and training activities.
6. Develop emergency response plans and coordinate drills to ensure preparedness for potential emergencies or critical incidents.
7. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of safety programs, identify areas for improvement, and implement corrective measures as necessary.
8. Stay updated on industry trends, new regulations, and emerging safety technologies to continuously improve safety practices.
9. Collaborate with regulatory agencies and external stakeholders to ensure compliance with relevant health and safety regulations.
10. Provide guidance and support to management and employees regarding health and safety matters.
Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field.
2. Proven experience working in health and safety roles within the energy and utilities sector.
3. In-depth knowledge of health and safety regulations, standards, and best practices, including OSHA, EPA, and relevant local regulations.
4. Strong understanding of utility operations, including power generation, distribution, and maintenance activities.
5. Excellent analytical skills to identify potential risks, investigate incidents, and develop appropriate preventive measures.
6. Effective communication skills to deliver safety training, write clear policies and procedures, and interact with employees at all levels.
7. Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
8. Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
9. Proficiency in using safety management software, incident reporting systems, and MS Office Suite.
10. Professional certifications such as Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) are preferred.
Note: The Utility Health and Safety Officer may be required to travel to multiple work sites and occasionally work outside regular business hours in response to emergencies or critical incidents.
