Job Summary:
The Library Assistant will provide essential support to the Librarian in managing the library's operations, resources, and services. This role requires a strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and a passion for assisting library patrons. The Library Assistant will perform a variety of administrative and customer service tasks to ensure the smooth functioning of the library and enhance the overall user experience.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Assist patrons in locating library materials, including books, journals, and digital resources.
2. Provide guidance and support to library users in utilizing library catalog systems, databases, and other library-related technologies.
3. Process new library materials, ensuring accurate cataloging, classification, and shelving.
4. Maintain the library's physical and digital collections, including periodic inventory checks, re-shelving, and weeding outdated materials.
5. Assist in the development and implementation of library programs and events, such as workshops, book clubs, and author visits.
6. Respond to reference inquiries in person, over the phone, and via email, providing accurate and timely information to library users.
7. Assist with interlibrary loan requests, coordinating borrowing and lending materials with other libraries.
8. Oversee the circulation desk, including checking materials in and out, registering new patrons, and collecting fines and fees.
9. Collaborate with library staff on collection development activities, recommending new acquisitions based on user needs and emerging trends.
10. Maintain library statistics and generate reports as required.
11. Perform general administrative duties, such as scheduling, record keeping, and maintaining library supplies.
12. Stay updated on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in librarianship.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Library and Information Science or a related field.
2. Knowledge of library systems, cataloging standards, and classification schemes.
3. Familiarity with library databases, digital resources, and library-related technologies.
4. Strong customer service orientation and ability to assist library users with diverse backgrounds and needs.
5. Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage time effectively and prioritize tasks.
6. Proficient in using computer software and library management systems.
7. Attention to detail and accuracy in performing tasks related to cataloging and record keeping.
8. Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, to interact with library users and staff.
9. Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
10. Flexibility to adapt to changing library needs and technological advancements.
11. Knowledge of library ethics, intellectual freedom, and confidentiality principles.
12. Physical stamina to perform tasks that may involve lifting and moving library materials.
