Job Description: Rare Books Librarian
Position Overview:
The Rare Books Librarian is responsible for overseeing and managing the rare books collection within the library. This role involves cataloging, preserving, and providing access to rare books, manuscripts, and other valuable materials. The Rare Books Librarian collaborates with researchers and scholars, assists with collection development, and ensures the proper care and maintenance of rare books and manuscripts.
Key Responsibilities:
- Catalog and classify rare books, manuscripts, and other valuable materials using standard cataloging tools and techniques.
- Develop and maintain accurate and comprehensive records of the rare books collection, including acquisitions, holdings, and circulation.
- Collaborate with other library staff to enhance discoverability and accessibility of rare books through digital platforms and library systems.
- Provide reference and research assistance to scholars, students, and library patrons regarding rare books and related materials.
- Organize and curate special exhibits and displays showcasing rare books, manuscripts, and other unique materials.
- Collaborate with other librarians and archivists to ensure the preservation and conservation of rare books and manuscripts.
- Stay up-to-date with emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in rare book librarianship.
- Support collection development by identifying and acquiring rare books and manuscripts of historical, cultural, or scholarly significance.
- Collaborate with faculty and researchers to integrate rare books into teaching, learning, and research activities.
- Participate in professional development activities, conferences, and workshops related to rare books librarianship.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) or equivalent from an accredited institution.
- In-depth knowledge of rare book cataloging standards, such as MARC21 and RDA.
- Proficient in using library cataloging systems and integrated library systems (ILS).
- Strong understanding of library metadata standards, controlled vocabularies, and classification systems, such as LC Classification.
- Familiarity with digital preservation standards and best practices for rare books and manuscripts.
- Ability to handle and care for fragile and valuable materials with attention to detail and preservation ethics.
- Excellent research and reference skills, with the ability to assist scholars and researchers in accessing and utilizing rare books.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including faculty, researchers, and library users.
- Strong organizational and project management abilities to manage and prioritize multiple tasks effectively.
- Knowledge of copyright laws, intellectual property rights, and permissions related to rare books.
- Ability to adapt to changing technologies and embrace new approaches to rare book librarianship.
