Job Description: Technical Services Librarian
Position Overview:
The Technical Services Librarian is responsible for managing and coordinating all technical aspects of library materials, including cataloging, classification, metadata creation, and acquisitions. This role requires expertise in library and information science principles, strong attention to detail, and a comprehensive understanding of library systems and technologies.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Develop and implement cataloging and classification procedures for library materials, ensuring consistent and accurate metadata representation.
2. Perform original and copy cataloging of various types of library resources using established standards, such as MARC, RDA, AACR2, and Library of Congress Classification.
3. Collaborate with other librarians and staff to ensure efficient and effective access to library resources through integrated library systems.
4. Oversee the library's acquisition process, including selecting and ordering materials, managing vendor relationships, and ensuring timely processing of invoices and payments.
5. Maintain and update the library's online catalog, ensuring accurate and user-friendly access to resources.
6. Stay abreast of emerging trends and technologies in library technical services, recommending and implementing improvements to workflows and systems.
7. Provide expertise and support to library users and staff on cataloging and technical services-related inquiries.
8. Train and supervise library staff involved in technical services activities, ensuring adherence to established standards and best practices.
9. Collaborate with faculty and staff to develop and implement metadata standards for digital collections and other emerging library initiatives.
10. Contribute to the development and implementation of library policies and procedures related to technical services.
Qualifications:
1. Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program.
2. Strong knowledge of cataloging principles, practices, and standards, including MARC, RDA, AACR2, and Library of Congress Classification.
3. Proficiency in using integrated library systems, library management software, and other library-related technologies.
4. Demonstrated experience in original and copy cataloging of various types of library resources.
5. Familiarity with emerging trends and technologies in library technical services, such as linked data, BIBFRAME, and authority control.
6. Understanding of acquisitions processes, including vendor management, selection, ordering, and invoicing.
7. Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
8. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
9. Knowledge of metadata standards and best practices for digital collections and other emerging library initiatives.
10. Ability to train and supervise staff in technical services activities.
11. Commitment to staying current in the field of library and information science through professional development activities.
