Job Summary:
The Environmental Health Inspector plays a crucial role in safeguarding public health by enforcing environmental regulations and promoting compliance with health and safety standards. This position is responsible for conducting inspections, investigations, and assessments of various establishments, facilities, and sites to ensure compliance with environmental health regulations and policies.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Conduct inspections of public and private establishments, including food service establishments, public swimming pools, childcare facilities, schools, healthcare facilities, and other establishments to assess compliance with environmental health regulations.
2. Evaluate and enforce compliance with local, state, and federal environmental health regulations, codes, and standards.
3. Conduct investigations and respond to complaints related to environmental health concerns, including air and water quality, hazardous waste, pest control, and noise pollution.
4. Collect samples of water, food, air, and other substances for laboratory analysis to determine their compliance with health and safety standards.
5. Prepare detailed reports documenting inspection findings, violations, and recommendations for corrective actions.
6. Provide guidance and education to facility owners, operators, and the public on environmental health regulations, best practices, and preventive measures.
7. Collaborate with other agencies, departments, and stakeholders to address environmental health issues and ensure coordinated response efforts during emergencies or public health crises.
8. Assist in the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and training programs related to environmental health and emergency preparedness.
9. Stay current with industry trends, advancements, and regulatory changes pertaining to environmental health practices.
Qualifications and Skills:
1. Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health, Public Health, or a related field.
2. Certification as an Environmental Health Specialist/Sanitarian (REHS/RS) or equivalent certification.
3. Knowledge of local, state, and federal environmental health regulations, codes, and standards.
4. Strong understanding of environmental health principles and practices, including sanitation, food safety, water quality, air quality, hazardous materials, and waste management.
5. Demonstrated experience conducting inspections, investigations, and assessments in accordance with established protocols and procedures.
6. Proficient in collecting environmental samples and interpreting laboratory test results.
7. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to prepare detailed reports and deliver effective presentations.
8. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to identify violations, assess risks, and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
9. Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
10. Proficiency in using computer applications and software for data management, report writing, and record keeping.
11. High ethical standards, integrity, and a commitment to maintaining confidentiality.
12. Valid driver's license and ability to travel to various locations within the jurisdiction.
