Job Description: Municipal Planner
Position Summary:
The Municipal Planner is responsible for overseeing and implementing comprehensive planning programs for municipalities within the government and public service sector. This role involves conducting research, analyzing data, and providing recommendations to support effective decision-making processes related to land use, zoning, urban development, and community growth. The Municipal Planner collaborates with various stakeholders to ensure compliance with regulations, policies, and sustainability goals.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Conduct research and gather data to analyze the current and future needs of the municipality.
2. Develop and update comprehensive plans, zoning regulations, and land use policies.
3. Evaluate and recommend strategies for sustainable growth and development.
4. Collaborate with municipal officials, community organizations, and the public to gather input and feedback on planning initiatives.
5. Assess and provide guidance on development proposals, ensuring compliance with municipal bylaws and regulations.
6. Prepare and present reports, studies, and recommendations to municipal councils, committees, and the public.
7. Monitor and evaluate planning initiatives, assessing their impact on the community and adjusting strategies as necessary.
8. Stay updated on relevant laws, regulations, and best practices in urban planning and public administration.
9. Provide guidance and support to municipal staff and other stakeholders regarding planning matters.
10. Collaborate with other departments and agencies to ensure coordination and alignment of planning activities with broader municipal goals and initiatives.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, Public Administration, or a related field. (Master's degree preferred)
2. Proven experience in municipal planning, preferably within a government or public service setting.
3. Strong knowledge of land use planning principles, zoning regulations, and urban development practices.
4. Proficiency in conducting research, data analysis, and preparing comprehensive reports.
5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information to diverse audiences.
6. Ability to collaborate and build effective relationships with stakeholders, including municipal officials, community groups, and the public.
7. Sound understanding of sustainability principles and their application in urban planning.
8. Familiarity with relevant legislation, policies, and regulations related to municipal planning.
9. Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to analyze complex issues and develop practical solutions.
10. Proficiency in using computer-aided design (CAD) software and geographic information system (GIS) tools is an asset.
