Job Summary:
The Theater Choreographer is responsible for creating and coordinating the dance and movement elements of theatrical productions, ensuring the seamless integration of choreography with the overall artistic vision of the production. They work closely with the director, cast, and creative team to develop and execute compelling and dynamic dance sequences that enhance the storytelling and engage the audience.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Collaborate with the director, artistic team, and cast to understand the artistic vision and objectives of the production.
2. Design and develop original choreography that effectively communicates and enhances the narrative, themes, and emotions of the production.
3. Teach and train cast members in choreographed dance sequences, ensuring consistent execution and maintaining artistic integrity.
4. Conduct rehearsals and choreography sessions, providing clear instructions and guidance to performers to ensure proper execution and alignment with the artistic vision.
5. Collaborate with other creative team members, such as costume designers and set designers, to ensure harmony and integration of choreography with overall production elements.
6. Analyze and adapt choreography based on the abilities and strengths of individual performers, ensuring the choreography showcases their talents.
7. Attend production meetings, contribute ideas, and provide input on casting decisions related to dance and movement roles.
8. Attend technical and dress rehearsals to ensure that choreography is executed effectively in conjunction with lighting, sound, and other production elements.
9. Maintain accurate documentation of choreography, including written notes, diagrams, and recordings, to ensure consistency and facilitate future productions or revivals.
10. Stay updated with current trends and developments in theater dance and choreography, continuously expanding knowledge and skills.
Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Theater Arts, Dance, or a related field (preferred).
2. Proven experience as a Theater Choreographer or a similar role within the performing arts industry.
3. Extensive knowledge of various dance styles and techniques, including classical, contemporary, ballet, jazz, and tap.
4. Ability to design and create original choreography that complements the themes, mood, and narrative of a production.
5. Proficient in teaching and training performers of varying skill levels, adapting choreography to suit individual abilities.
6. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with directors, cast members, and creative team members.
7. Exceptional organizational and time management abilities to efficiently plan and conduct rehearsals and meet production deadlines.
8. Detail-oriented with a keen eye for precision and aesthetic quality.
9. Flexibility and adaptability to adjust choreography based on feedback and changing production requirements.
10. Knowledge of theater production processes and ability to work within production budgets and timelines.
