Job Summary:
The Adaptive Physical Education Specialist is responsible for developing and implementing adaptive physical education programs for individuals with disabilities. They will work closely with students, teachers, and other professionals to design and deliver tailored physical education curricula that promote inclusion, physical fitness, and overall well-being. The specialist will also collaborate with the school administration to ensure compliance with relevant regulations and promote an inclusive and supportive environment for all students.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement adaptive physical education programs, ensuring they meet the unique needs and abilities of students with disabilities.
- Create individualized exercise plans, accommodating various physical, cognitive, and sensory impairments.
- Utilize evidence-based strategies and instructional techniques to facilitate motor skill development, physical fitness, and overall health improvement.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers and support personnel to integrate adaptive physical education into the overall educational plan for students with disabilities.
- Conduct ongoing assessments to monitor students' progress, identify areas for improvement, and adjust programs accordingly.
- Provide guidance and support to general physical education teachers in adapting activities and modifying equipment to include students with disabilities in regular physical education classes.
- Collaborate with parents/guardians, therapists, and other professionals involved in students' care to ensure a holistic approach to their physical development and well-being.
- Maintain accurate documentation of student progress, attendance, and program evaluations.
- Stay up to date with the latest research, trends, and advancements in adaptive physical education, and continually enhance professional knowledge and skills.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Adaptive Physical Education, or a related field.
- State teaching certification in Physical Education or Adapted Physical Education (if applicable).
- Proven experience working as an Adaptive Physical Education Specialist or in a related role.
- In-depth understanding of disabilities and experience adapting physical education programs for students with diverse needs.
- Knowledge of various disabilities, including physical, cognitive, sensory, and emotional impairments, and their impact on physical development and movement.
- Familiarity with assistive technologies, specialized equipment, and adaptive techniques used in adaptive physical education.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with students, parents, teachers, and other professionals.
- Ability to develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) for students with disabilities.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail to maintain accurate records and documentation.
- Patience, empathy, and a passion for promoting inclusive physical education experiences for individuals with disabilities.
- Ability to adapt and modify activities to accommodate various learning styles and abilities.
- Must adhere to professional ethics and maintain confidentiality.
