Job Summary:
The Substance Abuse Counselor will provide comprehensive counseling services to individuals struggling with substance abuse and addiction. This role requires excellent communication skills, a deep understanding of substance abuse treatment modalities, and a commitment to helping clients achieve long-term recovery. The Substance Abuse Counselor will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to develop personalized treatment plans, provide individual and group counseling sessions, and monitor client progress throughout their recovery journey.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct thorough assessments to evaluate clients' substance abuse history, mental health concerns, and treatment needs
- Develop individualized treatment plans in collaboration with clients, incorporating evidence-based practices and client-centered approaches
- Provide individual counseling sessions to address underlying issues and triggers related to substance abuse
- Facilitate group therapy sessions to promote peer support, relapse prevention, and enhanced coping strategies
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date client records, including progress notes, treatment plans, and discharge summaries
- Collaborate with other professionals, such as medical staff, psychologists, and social workers, to ensure a holistic approach to client care
- Monitor and evaluate clients' progress regularly, adjusting treatment plans as necessary to maximize effectiveness
- Provide crisis intervention and support during emergencies or critical situations, ensuring client safety and well-being
- Educate clients and their families about the nature of addiction, recovery, and available community resources
- Stay informed about advancements in the field of substance abuse treatment and attend professional development workshops and conferences as required
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field
- State licensure or certification as a Substance Abuse Counselor (e.g., Licensed Substance Abuse Counselor, Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor)
- Strong knowledge of substance abuse treatment modalities, including evidence-based practices and the stages of change model
- Experience conducting comprehensive assessments and developing individualized treatment plans
- Proficient in providing individual and group counseling, utilizing a variety of therapeutic techniques
- Ability to establish and maintain rapport with clients from diverse backgrounds, demonstrating empathy, patience, and cultural sensitivity
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to actively listen and provide non-judgmental support
- Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques and ability to respond effectively to emergencies
- Familiarity with community resources and referral networks for additional support services
- Highly organized and able to manage multiple priorities, while maintaining attention to detail and meeting deadlines
- Commitment to ethical standards, confidentiality, and professional boundaries within the counseling relationship
