Job Description: Building Inspector (Skilled Trades - Carpentry)
Position Overview:
The Building Inspector is responsible for performing skilled carpentry inspections to ensure compliance with building codes, regulations, and safety standards. This role requires a strong understanding of construction practices, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to effectively communicate inspection findings to stakeholders. The Building Inspector will play a vital role in promoting safe building practices while ensuring the quality and integrity of construction projects.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Conduct comprehensive inspections of residential and commercial building projects to verify compliance with relevant building codes, regulations, and approved plans.
2. Assess structural, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems to ensure adherence to safety standards and specifications.
3. Identify and document construction defects, violations, and non-compliance issues, providing detailed written reports and recommendations for corrective actions.
4. Collaborate with architects, contractors, and other stakeholders to address code violations and provide guidance on necessary modifications or improvements.
5. Review and analyze building plans, blueprints, and specifications to understand project scope and ensure compliance with applicable codes and regulations.
6. Maintain accurate records of inspections, reports, and related documentation, ensuring timely and efficient record-keeping processes.
7. Stay updated on industry standards, building codes, and regulations to ensure compliance and provide expert advice on changes or updates.
8. Participate in meetings and discussions with colleagues, contractors, and other professionals to exchange information and address inspection-related matters.
9. Provide excellent customer service by addressing inquiries, concerns, and complaints from the public, contractors, and other stakeholders in a professional and timely manner.
10. Collaborate with other departments or agencies to resolve complex issues and ensure regulatory compliance.
11. Assist in the development and implementation of training programs to enhance knowledge and skills related to building codes and inspection procedures.
12. Promote a culture of safety, professionalism, and continuous improvement within the organization.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. High school diploma or equivalent; additional certifications or vocational training in carpentry or a related field are preferred.
2. Minimum of 5 years of experience in carpentry or a closely related field, with a proven track record in construction inspection.
3. Thorough knowledge of local, state, and national building codes, standards, and regulations.
4. Strong understanding of construction practices, materials, and techniques, with an emphasis on carpentry and structural components.
5. Excellent attention to detail and the ability to identify and assess construction defects, violations, and safety hazards.
6. Effective written and verbal communication skills to clearly convey inspection results, write detailed reports, and provide professional recommendations.
7. Proficient in using technology and computer applications for record-keeping, report writing, and data analysis.
8. Strong organizational skills to manage multiple inspections, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
9. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
10. Customer service-oriented approach with the ability to interact professionally and tactfully with diverse stakeholders.
11. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to travel to various inspection sites.
